Loneliness, loss and depression

Find support to help you though loneliness, loss and depression.

Bereavement support

Losing a close friend or someone you love can be distressing and you may feel very alone. Feeling numb, sad, angry or even guilty after such a loss is natural. It's important to grieve and talking about how you feel can help - either with friends, family or with someone who understands loss.

Talk to your GP or contact Cruse Bereavement Support on 0808 808 1677.

Meeting people

It's not just bereavement that leaves you feeling blue. Being alone at home for long periods can be stressful and make you feel low.

Try to get out at least once a day, if it's not icy or very cold, or extremely hot. Check out classes and talks at your community centre or library. As well as learning something new, you may meet like-minded people.

Lunch with friends or a trip to the cinema takes a bit of organising but is well worth the effort. Some cinemas offer special deals for older people mid-week.

If you're part of a community, like a church or temple, other people will be very happy to pick you up and drop you back after services or events - you just have to ask them. Or you can contact voluntary transport schemes.

You may also like to attend a day centre. Here you can meet other people, have lunch and join in different social activities. Services, such as hairdressing or chiropody are often available for a small charge.

There are many day centres in Kent and Medway. Find your nearest centre on Kent County Council's or Medway Council's website.

NHS talking therapies

If you are depressed or anxious, talking therapy can transform the way you feel - and you may be able to have your therapy by phone or online, if that suits you best. Telling your GP how you feel can make a big difference too.

If you think you may be depressed, contact your GP practice.

Age UK provides talking therapy too. Find details about local services at Kent and Medway Mental Health and Wellbeing Information Hub
