Vaccines are vital for protecting the population of Kent and Medway; vaccines are the best defence we have against viruses including flu, Covid-19, meningitis, and measles, mumps and rubella.

Vaccines: Tell us what you think

What we did

In October 2025 we carried out engagement with people and communities across Kent and Medway to better understand views on vaccines. This included online surveys aimed at different groups, such as older people, those who are at higher risk of illness, parents and carers, and people who are pregnant. We asked people how they get information about vaccines, how confident they feel in that information, and what makes it easier or harder to access vaccination services.

What we heard

We heard from 460 people across 4 key groups of those eligible for vaccines;

·       People over 65 years old

·       People who are classed as “at risk”

·       Parents and carers of babies, children and teenagers

·       People who are pregnant

Most people told us they support vaccination and trust advice from healthcare professionals such as GPs, nurses, midwives and pharmacists. However, some people said they feel confused by mixed messages, changes to eligibility, and a lack of clear information about side effects or ingredients. Difficulties booking appointments, limited clinic times, and uncertainty about where to go were also common barriers. Parents and carers highlighted challenges around school‑based vaccinations, reminders and support for children with additional needs. People wanted clearer, more balanced information and easier access to clinics.

What will happen next

We are using what people told us to improve how we communicate about vaccines and how people access them. This includes making information clearer and easier to find, explaining eligibility and side effects in plain language, and improving awareness of local clinics — including pharmacies and walk‑in options. We will also work with partners to make vaccination services more accessible and convenient, so people can make informed decisions and get vaccinated in a way that works for them.
